The best new products often begin life in the minds of customers, rather than designers. That's why we always begin projects by looking at issues through customers' eyes. How do they see the world? What are they looking for? What do they actually want?
As designers, rather than researchers, we gain useful insights from qualitative research. Sitting-in on research sessions, we prod and probe, searching for clues that might lead to a new product concept. We encourage people to talk about their current experience and imagine how their future experience might be better.
Later, of course, our designers' eyes come into their own. Early on, though, we're happy to rely on the vision of real people.
