The Sky+ box, integrated digital TV receiver and video recorder
After featuring the Sky + box in poster and TV advertising, the broadcaster achieved a 25% increase in overall sales - attributed to the ‘halo effect’ of Sky +.
The box receives digital television and records programmes without using video-tape or DVD’s. Offering the highest-ever interactivity, it also allows viewers to ‘pause’ real-time transmissions when interrupted by a phone call or knock at the door. A key feature is the rotating LED display, highlighting the function in progress.
We worked closely with the initial manufacturer, Pace Microtechnology, to develop the Sky+ box. While they concentrated on the electronics, we focused on its usability. Our idea for a rotating LED display, with different colours indicating different functions, came from a research insight suggesting that users need to know what the box is doing. (‘How do I know it’s working?’) This innovation was adopted by Sky as the basis for the Sky+ on-screen interface and branding.
Our work has set the design language for subsequent generations of Sky products. |
